Chiropractic Care for Parents and Families in Mackay

Pregnancy, the early baby years, the toddler-lifting years, and everything that comes after. Your body absorbs all of it. Align Health Co treats parents who have been putting their own health last for years, and looks after the rest of the family when they need it too.

The Parent Who Threw Their Back Out Picking Up the Toddler

We hear this version of the story most weeks. A parent reaches down for a child, a car seat, a basket of washing, and something in the lower back gives. The lift was nothing unusual. The back had been quietly complaining for months.

Parenting loads the body in ways that don't show up on any job description. The lifting is repetitive and asymmetric. Feeding positions hold the neck flexed for stretches at a time. A toddler rides on one hip because that's the side with a free arm. Sleep gets broken into pieces, which lowers pain tolerance and slows the tissue repair that would normally happen overnight.

Most parents push through. They have to. The result is that small issues compound. By the time someone books an appointment, they've usually been working around the problem for months, sometimes a year or more.

The earlier you address it, the shorter the path back.

Most parents have been managing a back problem for months by the time they come in.

Common Presentations

These are the presentations we see commonly in parents of young children.

  • Lower back pain from lifting, particularly the baby-to-cot and floor-to-standing movements
  • Neck and upper back tension from feeding positions and overnight settling
  • Wrist and forearm strain from constant carrying and lifting
  • Hip and pelvic pain from carrying a child on one side for long stretches
  • Postural deterioration linked to fatigue and disrupted sleep
  • Headaches that build out of accumulated neck and upper back tension

Pregnancy Care, From First Trimester Through to Birth

Pregnancy care makes up a significant part of the caseload at Align Health Co. Our practitioners regularly treat pregnant patients, often right through to the final weeks before birth.

The body changes a lot in nine months. The pelvis shifts, the centre of gravity moves forward, the ribcage opens out, and the postural muscles start working differently to keep everything upright. That mechanical shift is where most of the presenting symptoms come from. Common ones we see in pregnant patients include low back pain, pelvic girdle pain and hip pain, mid-back and rib tension, and neck and shoulder tightness from the postural change.

Safety for mother and baby sits at the top of every decision in a pregnancy appointment. Techniques and positioning get adapted by trimester. Pregnancy pillows and side-lying positions are used as the bump grows. The pressure used is lighter. We check in constantly about what feels comfortable and what doesn't, and we adjust on the fly. If something needs to change, it changes.

We don't make claims about what chiropractic care can do for labour, baby positioning, or anything outside musculoskeletal symptom management. What we do is help with the musculoskeletal load that pregnancy puts on the body, so that load is easier to carry.

After the Baby Arrives

Post-pregnancy care is a regular part of what we see. The body has done nine months of growing, undergone birth, then straight into feeding, settling, and carrying a newborn. The musculoskeletal load doesn't stop.

Common post-pregnancy presentations include low back pain, neck and shoulder pain from feeding positions, mid-back tightness, and headaches that build up from accumulated neck tension. These are the areas we treat.

To be completely transparent. Align Health Co is not a specialist in pelvic floor rehabilitation or postpartum-specific rehab. If pelvic floor function is your primary concern, the right person to see is a women's health physiotherapist, and we are happy to point you in that direction. What we will do is treat the broader musculoskeletal recovery, the back, neck, shoulders, hips, and headaches, and refer to a women's health physio for the pelvic floor specifics. Often the two run in parallel.

When the Kids Need Looking At Too

Yes, we see paediatric patients. Newborns through to teenagers. The approach is age-appropriate, gentle, and a parent stays in the room for every appointment.

Babies. No manipulation. The work with babies is almost entirely gentle soft tissue release, with the activator instrument used occasionally on its lowest setting. A particular focus is helping babies move the head and neck well, which can support easier positioning during breastfeeding. That's the scope of what we describe. We don't make claims about reflux, colic, sleep, or anything outside chiropractic's evidence base. Parents who want to talk through what an appointment with a baby actually looks like are welcome to call us first.

Children and teenagers. Assessment and treatment scaled to the child's age, body size, and what they've come in for. Common reasons we see kids include sports-related complaints, postural changes through growth spurts, and the heavy-schoolbag-on-one-shoulder type presentation.

Scoliosis checks. Scoliosis checks and assessment are an area that all the chiropractors at Align Health Co are very interested in. For cases that require further investigations, or when parents and/or chiropractors are concerned about scoliosis, referral for EOS imaging is available. EOS imaging is the latest in scoliosis diagnosis and assessment. It is very low in radiation compared to traditional x-rays and bulk billed through Medicare; it is used when the chiropractors need to get more information on clinical presentations.

Safety. A consistent priority across every paediatric appointment. The parent stays present throughout. Techniques are chosen for the child in front of us, not from a standard template.

We also have a kids and families waiting area with colouring and space for children to settle before the appointment. If you're booking for someone else in the family and you'd like to talk through the approach before locking it in, call the clinic on (07) 4829 4364.

How It Works Around a Family Schedule

Step 01
Assessment Appointment

Full history, physical assessment, and first treatment. Online booking shows real-time availability, so you don't have to find a window during business hours to call.

Weeks 1–6
Active Treatment

Weekly or twice-weekly appointments while the acute issue settles. Home exercises designed to fit into actual parent reality: short, manageable, no equipment, doable while the kettle boils.

Weeks 7–12
Transition

Less frequent appointments. The home program takes on more of the work. By this point you should be feeling and moving substantially better, and managing more of it yourself.

Month 3+
Ongoing Maintenance

Monthly visits, optional. You're managing it day to day. We're here when something flares or when you feel things slipping.

You Can't Look After Everyone Else If Your Body Isn't Working

Book an initial consultation and we'll get a clear picture of what appears to be going on. Your written working diagnosis and path forward are covered at the second appointment, the Report of Findings. Online booking is open any time, including the 11pm window once the house is finally quiet.
